Opening Keynote : Paying Better Attention to the Problem

Presented by Indi Young

When design and development teams work on solutions, opportunities arise to explore unchartered problem spaces. For Indi Young, the problem space is about understanding people and their larger purpose. In her talk, Indi will outline what a problem space is, how to navigate the ambiguity of the problem space with empathy, and demonstrate techniques to explore problems and bring creative solutions.

The Power of Accessible Design

Presented by Neby Teklu

When most people hear “accessibility” they tend to think about one group of people: the chronically blind. In this talk we’ll expand on this view by offering a modern approach to defining disabilities. I’ll also share how teams at Dropbox take an empathetic approach to designing for equity.

Knowing Your Users when they live 12,000 miles away

Presented by Ted McCarthy

I conduct user research almost exclusively in “emerging markets” that have, up until the past several years, remained largely ignored by the majority of Bay Area tech companies. Users in these markets are eagerly getting online, and represent an increasingly large proportion of any company’s user base. But my team sits primarily in Sunnyvale, California, and while some of them do originally hail from “emerging” tech markets like India, many do not. How do we build apps and services that users in a remote village in the Philippines might find useful, and be compelled to use? How do we learn from individuals in these markets, and tailor our strategies and designs to them? I’m still learning this myself, but I hope to share some of the small victories and failures I’ve learned along the way in this WIAD talk.
