Decolonizing Practices and IA

Presented by:

Vanessa (Myho) Makiyama

My friend and I discovered that British Columbia represents more than half of the First Nations languages diversity in the whole country. However, all of these singular languages are at risk of disappearance. We wanted to do something. Could we work with such a sensitive subject while foreigners?

My friend and I discovered that British Columbia represents more than half of the First Nations languages diversity in the whole country. However, all of these singular languages are at risk of disappearance. We wanted to do something. Could we work with such a sensitive subject while foreigners?

In this presentation, I would like to share my experience for my graduate project at Vancouver Film School called “Untranslated World”. Untranslated Wo(r)ld is an VR immersive experience prototype through the distinct seven First Nations language families from B.C. and their respective languages, following the 2018 First People’s Culture Council’s language report.

What does it mean to make something good? Was I solving a problem or being complicit in the problem I wanted to solve?

I relied heavily on IA processes not only to emphatize with my subject - but as a way to be more aware of my design thinking and doing.
